Snowy mountains, green pastures with grazing livestock and turquoise lakes. Every frame in Switzerland is postcard-perfect. Adding to the lure of this beautiful country is it’s charming mountain villages. My two personal favourites are Lauterbrunnen and Wengen. Here’s why you should include them both in your itinerary on your next trip to Switzerland.
Lauterbrunnen
This picturesque village is an hour and a half train ride from Bern. It has one main road where you can stock up on groceries at the Coop, drink a beer at the only pub in town or splash some cash on a new watch or a Swiss army knife (this is Switzerland after all).
Lauterbrunnen literally means ‘many fountains’, a fitting name for a town located in The Valley of 72 waterfalls. The landmark of Lauterbrunnen, The Staubbach Falls, is only 300 m from the village.
Adding to the charm of the village is the bell-wearing livestock. Sheep, goats and cows are everywhere!
Lauterbrunnen is right in the centre of excellent hiking and biking trails.
If you’re looking for something more easy-going, join one of six village walks or take a stroll along the river.
Looking for excitement? Paraglide above the valley and enjoy panoramic views of the mountains around you.
Craving more excitement? Interlaken is just around the corner, where you can enjoy adventurous outdoor activities like bungee jumping and river rafting.

Wengen
Across from Lauterbrunnen, perched 400 m above the valley below, is Wengen. The only way to reach this storybook village is via train.
Wengen is one of those destinations where you can just wander around aimlessly and take in the beautiful surroundings. Browse through the streets and be sure to buy local products.
To get the best view of Wengen with snow-capped mountains in the backdrop, head over to St Bernard’s church.
If mountains pique your interest (pun intended), explore them using hiking and biking trails.
Why not enjoy the quintessential Swiss cuisine, cheese fondue, at a local restaurant?
And finish your meal with a slice of apple strudel.
During the cold months of the year, Wengen transforms into a winter wonderland. Everything is covered with a blanket of snow, the ideal weather for skiing and snowboarding. Wengen also hosts an internationally renowned ski race.
Wengen is a great starting point for a trip to Jungfraujoch, the top of Europe!
