Review: Capo Bay Hotel

by Sonja Faul

Nestled in the heart of Protaras, right on the sands of Fig Tree Bay, is Capo Bay Hotel. This lovely five star hotel was my home away from home for a week during my trip to the east coast of Cyprus.

Location

The location of Capo Bay Hotel couldn’t be better! It sits on the main street that cuts through Protaras, within walking distance from many restaurants, pubs and clubs. Because Protaras is quite small, everything can easily be reached on foot. The hotel faces Fig Tree Bay, the best beach in Protaras and my personal favourite from all the beaches I saw in Cyprus. With the best beach quite literally a stone’s throw away from the hotel, what more could I ask for?

Rooms

I stayed in a superior sea view room, with a small private balcony that overlooked the swimming pool below, and the beach in the distance. The room and ensuite bathroom were both spacious and fitted with all the standard amenities to make my stay pleasant and very comfortable. One of my favourite activities was making myself a cup of tea in the mornings and watching the sunrise over the sea from my balcony.

Room tip: Choose a room with a view of Fig Tree Bay. The view is exceptional and worth the extra money!

Breakfast

A full breakfast buffet is served every morning from 07h00 to 10h00 at Elea Breakfast Restaurant. The selection is extensive, from fresh fruit to local treats such as natural yoghurt and pan-fried Halloumi cheese (my personal favourite) and all the other usual food (eggs done every way and pastries). What made breakfast at Capo Bay Hotel so special, was the traditional Cyprus coffee. The coffee is brewed in small, long handled pots in a barrel filled with hot sand.

Hospitality

Checking in was easy and I received cold, bottled water and sweet Cypriot treats. Every morning as I left the hotel, I received two bottles of cold mineral water.

Rooms are cleaned daily and the olive-oil based toiletries are replenished.

Awaiting me in my room was a personal invitation to a mixer, held every Tuesday, to meet the staff members of the hotel. Admittedly, I only attended the mixer for the free canapés and drinks, but I ended up enjoying the conversations and mingling with the friendly staff members. They were polite and interested in my life back in South Africa.

Facilities

Capo Bay Hotel has one of the best spa facilities and outdoor swimming pools I have ever seen!

The Oneira Spa has a sauna, jacuzzi, steam bath, sanarium and a heated indoor lap pool. The maintenance of the spa was impeccable and the atmosphere tranquil and peaceful. I visited the spa every day after returning from a long day of sightseeing. My end-of-day spa routine included the steam room, sauna and a soak in the jacuzzi.

Around the hotel

I never had a dull moment! Everything in Protaras can easily be reached on foot. You can also rent a bicycle and explore the area or take a cruise. Laze on the sands of Fig Tree Bay or take a stroll along the beach as the sun sets. The possibilities are endless!

What I liked best:

  • The beautiful view from my room of Fig Tree bay!
  • The location of Capo Bay Hotel! It’s right on the Mediterranean Sea and walking distance from everything in Protaras.
  • The Oneira Spa facilities. Because the spa area is restricted to persons over the age of 16, it is truly a tranquil haven where you can go to restore your tired body.
  • The hotel had a very homey feel, mainly due to the friendly and helpful staff members.

What I didn’t like:

My stay at Capo Bay Hotel was great and I could not find any fault! If I had to comment on something small, it would be the internet in our room. At the time of our stay, WiFi was limited to the lounge and foyer of the hotel (it is available in the rooms now).

Would I stay here again?

Yes! A resounding yes! I loved everything about this hotel, and if given the opportunity, I wouldn’t hesitate to stay here again.
