I chose Green Tiger House because it was rated as the best hostel in Thailand on Hostelworld. It’s easy to see why.
The hostel in located inside the northern wall of the old city of Chiang Mai, in a quiet little street just off the main road. It’s within walking distance of all the major attractions in the old city. Green Tiger House offers both dormitory and private rooms.
When I arrived
Check-in was a breeze. After paying a 100 THB deposit for a room key, that includes a lock, I was shown to my bunk bed in an 8 bed mixed dormitory.
Rooms
The dormitory rooms are spacious and the layout is great. The mattress is firm and comfortable. Eight people can easily sleep and move about without getting in each other’s way. Clean linen is provided. Each bed has its own private bed light and power socket.
The lockers are located inside the room and corresponds to your bed number. They are huge with more than enough space to store your belongings in.
The shared, ensuite bathroom has two basins, two toilets and two showers with hot water. Inside the bathroom you can find complimentary toiletries including hand wash, body wash, shampoo and conditioner. A towel can be rented for 30 THB.
The dormitory rooms have air conditioning as well as wall-mounted fans, a must in the summer heat.
Facilities
Free coffee, tea and toast is available in the lobby 24 hours a day. The selection of teas is great and homemade preserves/jam is also available in the mornings. This served as my breakfast in the mornings before I headed out to see the sights.
Green Tiger House also has a beautiful swimming pool with sun chairs.
The sky lounge is located on the 4th floor and offers great views of the surroundings, particularly at night.
Free WiFi is available throughout the property.
Staff
The staff is really friendly, helpful and responsive. I was given a map of Chiang Mai with all the highlights to see and great suggestions for vegetarian restaurants. The staff also assisted me with the booking of my bus ticket to Chiang Rai.
What I didn’t like:
Nothing comes to mind. Although the hostel does not really have a social atmosphere, I still made good friends with the people in my dorm room.
What I liked best:
- The free tea and toast which served as my breakfast.
- The staff members that went out of their way to help me. You receive the same level of service, whether you stay in a dorm room or a private room.
- The location of the hostel. It’s perfect for exploring Chiang Mai on foot.
- The spacious dorm rooms! It’s the best dorm room I’ve ever stayed in!
Would I stay here again?
Yes, definitely yes. I received better service at the Green Tiger House than I did from other hotels in Thailand. The toiletries are great and the water in the showers is actually hot!
Although this hostel is a bit more expensive than other hostels in Chiang Mai, it’s well worth the money.
