High on my bucket list for my trip to the USA was going to a traditional diner. You know, the kind of diner you see on TV shows and in the movies. The kind that serves authentic American grub. A greasy spoon with a casual atmosphere where colourful locals hang out at the counter.
Enter Buddy’s
As it turned out, right around the corner from my Airbnb accommodation in Somerville, was Buddy’s Diner. This small diner is inside an old train car, complete with original sliding metal door, counter tops and bar stools. Buddy’s doesn’t have a traditional menu either. The menu is written on paper plates and fasten with pegs on a line above the grill.
I was greeted by a friendly waitress that looked like she had just gotten out of bed. Dressed in a baggy sweater with her hair in a bun on her head, she offered me something to drink. As she fixed me a cup of tea, my eyes perused the menu. The selection was classic: eggs done every way, bacon, hash, toast, bagels and sandwiches.
The waitress took my order and repeated it to the cook at the back of the car. He came out and greeted me, before proceeding to prepare the food from scratch on the grill right in front of me. The waiting time was a little bit longer than in a usual restaurant as the food is cooked to order. I didn’t mind the wait though, I loved watching the grill man do his thing in the kitchen.
The food was served piping hot. The highlight of breakfast for me was the crispy home fried potatoes tossed in a delicious blend of spices.
The portions were large and the price reasonable. I loved it so much that I went back again!
Buddy’s is the real deal! If you are looking for an authentic, old school diner experience in Boston, look no further. Buddy’s Diner is open every day for breakfast and lunch. Don’t hesitate to pop in if you find yourself in the Somerville area.
